Period Inspiration:

After 1774, French furniture changed its mind about the curve. Rocaille movement gave way almost overnight to the straight line, the fluted column, and the disciplined rosette - a shift fed as much by the newly excavated ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum as by any single royal decree. Few forms carry this turn more clearly than the Louis XVI demi-lune console table, and few patrons pursued it with more appetite than the Princes de Condé at Chantilly, whose château rivalled Versailles in refinement, if not in scale.

This console continues that vocabulary in solid teak, hand-carved by master craftsmen and gilded entirely by hand. Its half-moon silhouette closes beneath a Carrara-veined marble top. The apron is worked in tapering, gathered fluting - called "asparagus" banding in the trade - interrupted by square dice blocks, each centred on a hand-carved gilded paterae rosette, the single most recognisable ornament of post-1774 French taste. A beaded border divides frieze from marble; four tapering, fluted legs, capped in acanthus-leaf capitals, complete the piece.

Built, like its 18th-century forebears, to stand as a pier table beneath a mirror or against the wall between two windows - a hand-carved continuation of a style that has never gone out of argument, not an imitation of one.
