Period Inspiration:

The houndstooth - pied-de-poule in French, "dog's tooth" in the Border Scots dialect that first named it - migrated from the sheep pastures of the Scottish Highlands into the weaving mills of Yorkshire and Northumberland, and thence into the cutting rooms of Savile Row. By the late 1950s, it had completed a further journey: from bespoke suiting cloth into the vocabulary of British modernist interior design, arriving just as the King's Road, Chelsea was becoming the decade's most consequential address for furniture, fashion, and ideas.

This two-seat sofa belongs to that precise moment. Its silhouette - straight tapered arms with a restrained outward flare, knife-edged back cushions with contrast black piping, tight seat, sharply tapered legs - is the formal grammar of British mid-century modernism as practiced by Ernest Race and Robin Day in the years between 1955 and 1968. Every line is disciplined. Nothing decorates that does not also structure.

The all-over houndstooth in ivory and charcoal carries the full weight of that tailoring tradition into the room. This is not pattern as ornament. It is pattern as provenance.
