Neighbourhoods such as Matunga in Bombay developed during this era as part of the city’s early twentieth-century urban expansion, and many residential interiors of the period embraced modern furniture that balanced international design influences with local materials and craftsmanship. Furniture workshops across Bombay frequently produced pieces in solid teak paired with woven cane, combining durability with climate-appropriate ventilation suited to tropical homes.
